Stigma and discrimination faced by drug users or people who use drugs in Chennai is multidimensional
a) Stigma and discrimination by the Law enforcement â The Police even though are sensitized about treating drug users with sympathy they are found to ill-treat the drug users more often and do not refer them to NGOâs.
b) Stigma and discrimination by the Family- The family when comes to the last stage that the person will not discontinue using drugs they treat him as a third person and at most times is literally sent away.
c) Stigma and discrimination by the Society â the Society considers the drug users as merely criminals and often physically harmed.
d) Stigma and discrimination by the NGOâs or CBOs run by EX-users.
The Current drug users do not frequent the DICs most often since the staffs treat them at times with no dignity, even though the staffs too were ex-users.
